ANA holdings have been running a campaign called the Tastes of JAPAN by ANA, which introduces something unique to Japan to both Japanese and foreign customers, since September 2013. In this campaign, they feature three prefectures in a three-month period, to eventually cover all 47 prefectures of Japan. From March to April 2019, the campaign featured Kyoto, a city which has been selected as world's most popular city.

With food, liquor, confectionary, and culture as its main themes, ANA incorporated Kyoto's specialty products into their service. No confectionary that speaks for Kyoto comes without matcha. They decided that a confectionary with matcha would be the most appropriate to be served in first class.

The theme was to use a long-established tea company from Uji, Kyoto, for matcha confectionaries that represent Kyoto. As a result, rolled cake and ice cream using Yamamasa Koyamaen's matcha were selected.

These matcha confectionaries were served in first class of flights departing from Japan, receiving a favorable reputation from both domestic and international travelers.
